Q-Switched or Picosecond Tattoo Removal?
At Plymouth Tattoo Removal, you don’t have to settle for whichever laser a clinic happens to own.
We offer both Q-Switched Nd:YAG and Picosecond laser tattoo removal, giving you a genuine choice between proven, cost-effective treatment and our most advanced premium technology.
Both options can produce excellent results. The right choice depends on your tattoo, its colours and density, your skin type, your treatment goals and how much you want to invest in each session.

Which Technology Is Right for You?
Both Q-Switched and Picosecond lasers are highly effective at removing unwanted tattoos, but they each have their own advantages.
Q-Switched laser technology has been the gold standard for tattoo removal for many years and continues to produce excellent results for thousands of clients every day. Picosecond technology is a newer advancement that delivers ultra-short pulses of energy, allowing tattoo ink to be fragmented into even smaller particles. In suitable tattoos, this may lead to faster clearance and improved response in some stubborn inks.
Neither technology is "better" for every tattoo. The most suitable choice depends on your tattoo, your goals and your budget.

How Do Q-Switched and Picosecond Lasers Work?
Although both lasers are designed to remove tattoo ink safely and effectively, they deliver energy in different ways.
Q-Switched Tattoo Removal
Q-Switched lasers deliver extremely short pulses of high-powered light that are absorbed by the tattoo ink. The ink rapidly heats and fractures into smaller particles, allowing your body's immune system to gradually remove them over the following weeks.
Q-Switched technology has been used successfully for tattoo removal for decades and remains one of the most trusted and clinically proven treatment methods available.
Picosecond Tattoo Removal
Picosecond lasers deliver energy in pulses that are around 1,000 times shorter than traditional nanosecond Q-Switched lasers.
Rather than relying as much on heat, these ultra-short pulses create a stronger photoacoustic effect, shattering tattoo ink into even finer particles. In suitable tattoos, this may allow the body to clear ink more efficiently and can reduce the number of treatments required.
Picosecond technology is particularly useful for some stubborn tattoos and can provide faster clearance in appropriate cases.
Why does this matter?
For many tattoos, both technologies can achieve excellent results.
The difference isn't simply about one laser being "better" than the other. It's about matching the right technology to your tattoo, your expectations and your budget.
That's why we offer both.

How We Choose the Right Laser for Your Tattoo
Choosing between Q-Switched and Picosecond treatment isn't simply about selecting the newest technology. Every tattoo is different, which is why we assess each client individually before recommending the most suitable option.
During your consultation, we'll consider factors such as:
- The colours within your tattoo
- How old the tattoo is
- The density and depth of the ink
- Its size and location on your body
- Your skin type
- Whether you're aiming for complete removal or fading for a cover-up
- Your budget and preferred treatment pace
Sometimes Picosecond technology offers clear advantages, while in other cases Q-Switched treatment can achieve excellent results at a lower cost. Our recommendation is always based on what's best for your tattoo—not simply the laser we happen to own.
